Blizzard 2011

Snowpocolypse...Snowmaggedden...the list goes on!

Chicago was hit with an official blizzard on Tuesday evening.  All of the weather models called for it and boy, were they right!

It was actually quite amazing.  I was "fortunate" enough to begin my drive home from work and to pick up Sophie shortly after the storm began around 3:30 pm. The snow was coming down so hard it was already creating white out conditions and the roads appeared unplowed.  Luckily, we got home safe and sound and found the dad shoveling the driveway (trying to get ahead of the massive snow fall to come).

I made a huge pot of tortilla soup and we kept our eyes on the weather channel and out the windows.  We were fortunate that the power and DirectTV did not go out last night.  The lights flickered a few times, but it never gave into the storm.  After Sophie went down, the snow was really falling and the thundersnow began.  If you have never heard of thundersnow (like myself) it literally is a thunderstorm during a snow storm.  There was lightening and thunder.  I never actually heard the thunder - although I know people that did - but I saw the lightening.  Quite the weather phenomenon.

Blake and I went to bed around 11pm and when we got up this morning, we were shocked with the amount of snow on the ground...and thankful that we both had Snow Days (first in 8 years!).

We could not even open the back door because the snow was blocking it...so Max had to be let out the front.  He was so confused at first.  He stayed really close to the house at first, but once he realized it was just snow he barreled through the front yard.  There are currently paths through the front where Max can do his business.  He becomes a puppy again when he gets to play in the snow.  Sophie had a ball watching him this morning.  She thought it was hilarious to see him leaping and hopping in order to make it through the 20 inches we got.

Yes, we officially got 20 inches of snowfall.  We measured with our yard stick.

Late in the morning, Blake went out to begin shoveling the driveway and our cars out since there was a 4 ft drift at the end of the drive due to the plows.  I bundled up Sophie and myself and we ventured out.  It was so deep in the backyard and with Sophie so light - she just kinda sank a bit.  There are pictures below of us in the backyard and it was so deep - probably 4 ft drifts in the back too - that I am not even hitting the ground.

This was a pretty cool event and although it was a pain to dig our way out, it's pretty amazing to see.

Not even standing on the ground - the snow is about 3-4 ft in the backyard per drifts
